As some of you may know (and some may not), I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to Vivien Leigh. It all began in middle school when my friend Becky told me I had to watch Gone with the Wind, which was airing on TNT over the weekend, because it was one of the best films ever. So, that weekend I spent four hours in front of my brother’s 13 inch silver TV absorbing this fanatasic, amazing, mind blowing, marvelous, wonderful, magnificent, brillant movie. I couldn’t believe “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” was the end! No, no, no! Rhett don’t go! Tomorrow isn’t another day, Scarlett! Go run after him! . . . Okay, back to the point. I was captivated not only by the film, but by Vivien Leigh. I went to the library to find out more about her. I devoured two biographies and was sad to learn she didn’t star in many films post-GWTW and shocked to discover she was dead. Years later when we got the internet, I still held my fascination for Vivien and scoured the web for more info. There was only 1 decent website and a ton of starter websites that were incomplete or abandoned. Fast forward to summer 1999. I was living in Gainesville and had just broken up with a boyfriend, moved into an empty 4 bedroom apartment, enrolled in 2 summer A courses, and was 20 years old (not yet legal to drink or get into the cool places in town). The majority of my friends were back home for the summer so I had a lot of free time. Besides studying for my German and literature classes, running 3 miles a day, and working on my tan, I decided I should utilize the university’s grand libraries and begin my own website on Vivien Leigh. I was a novice at web design and didn’t own a scanner (yet) but I began what is now VIVIEN-LEIGH.COM.
Eight years later, I’m still working on the site. I’m adding photos and more information nearly every month. The webpage has had over 1.5 million visitors since 1999, and I have my own Vivien Leigh ‘yahoo group’ with 76 members. In addition, I get emails nearly every day from fans, publishers, and writers asking for information or simply wanting to thank me for my hard work. It’s always the highlight of my email day. As of recently, a writer has been in contact with me concerning the publication of her upcoming book, A Season with Vivien. The book was published just this month and the writer, Dilys Gater, kindly sent me a free copy as a thank you for helping her. If you can truly judge a book by its cover (the book’s cover is gorgeous!), then this study should be marvelous. I flipped through it on Saturday and was shocked when I got to the last page. My dear little website was mentioned in black and white! What an honor! You can imagine my excitement. Take a look! (for larger view, click HERE)
